Call lights, tele alarms, phone rings, text notifications, pain meds, crying, toileting, chemo due... It is so stressful to fit a card game in between the tasks.
Many of us heard how damaging the stress is for our health. I have a surprising fact to share with you. It does not have to be. If you view your stress as a helpful tool to overcome challenging life situations, stress changes the way it affects your body.
Those people who view a pounding of their heart as a helpful process to deliver blood to organs in a stressful state lack the damaging effect of the stress – blood vessel constriction. The pounding heart with relaxed blood vessels is a state of courage and joy.
Oxytocin is a stress hormone with a magical power. It protects our heart by helping heart cells to regenerate, it keeps our blood vessels relaxed and it encourages us to seek human connections and support. Human connection promotes release of even more oxytocin. Creating meaningful connections with our patients and co-workers heals and protects us. Isn’t it beautiful that we work in a cycle of healing without knowing it? We care for patients and the act of caring cares for us.
